Eight & Bob The Original: A fragrance steeped in history and elegance

Some fragrances announce themselves. Others, rarer and infinitely more distinguished, simply linger in memory long after the wearer has departed the room. Eight & Bob The Original belongs without question to this second, more exalted order.

It is not merely a scent. It is a chapter in a story that unfolded quietly on the French Riviera, written in the private notebooks of Albert Fouquet and carried across an ocean by one of the most consequential men of the twentieth century.

To wear The Original is to inhabit that story, and to understand it is to understand the very soul of Eight & Bob.

Albert Fouquet: The connoisseur behind the formula

Long before the name Eight & Bob meant anything to anyone, there was a young man in a room at the top of a Parisian château, surrounded by botanical essences, handwritten notes, and the quiet counsel of Philippe, the family butler.

Albert Fouquet was the son of a Parisian aristocrat, raised in the refinement and restraint that defined French elite society in the early twentieth century.

He was not a perfumer in any commercial sense. He was something rarer: a man of genuine olfactory sensibility who composed fragrances purely for himself, driven by curiosity, by memory, and by an innate understanding that scent is the most intimate form of self-expression.

The essences he created in that upper room of the château were never intended for the world. They were bespoke in the most literal sense, born of Fouquet's own travels, observations, and botanical discoveries.

Philippe assisted in their preparation and kept meticulous order among the vials and formulas that accumulated over the years.

It was a private world of extraordinary refinement. It would not remain private for long.
The encounter that changed everything.

What changed everything was not ambition, nor commerce, nor any deliberate act of introduction. It was, as the most consequential things so often are, simply a summer.

The summer that rewrote history

In the summer of 1937, Albert Fouquet was holidaying on the Côte d'Azur, as was the custom among his circle.

The French Riviera in those years before the war was a place of particular luminosity: a theatre of elegance where Europe's finest families and their international acquaintances gathered in an atmosphere of unhurried pleasure.

It was in this setting that Fouquet encountered a young American travelling through France in a convertible.

His name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, then a student, already possessed of the magnetic charm that would later define his public life.

Within moments of their introduction, Kennedy was captivated by something he could not immediately name: the perfume that Fouquet wore.

The following morning, Fouquet left a sample at Kennedy's hotel along with a note whose wit and elegance were perfectly in keeping with its author: "In this bottle, you will discover a touch of French glamour to enhance your American charm. ."

That very exchange, playful yet decisive, brought forth The Original: a fragrance crafted from Fouquet’s private notebooks, his botanical discoveries, and a gesture of quiet generosity.

The letter that carried a fragrance across the Atlantic

What followed that Riviera encounter became part of the quiet chronicle of Eight & Bob, a story preserved not in grand declarations, but in the intimacy of correspondence.

Upon returning to America, J.F.K found himself unable to forget the scent. It was not merely its composition that lingered, but the atmosphere it seemed to evoke, a certain French elegance, effortless and assured, that had accompanied Fouquet himself.

He wrote to Albert with a request both simple and revealing: eight samples of the perfume and, with a touch of playful insistence, “And if your production allows, another one for Bob.”

That “Bob” referred to his younger brother, adding a personal and familial nuance to the request.

It was this note that would give rise to the name Eight and Bob, a phrase that carries within it the charm of that original exchange and the discreet humor of Fouquet’s world.

A chapter interrupted

What began as a gesture of quiet generosity would, in time, travel far beyond the Riviera, carried not by intention, but by memory.

Yet that journey almost never continued, for Albert Fouquet’s life was cut short in an automobile accident near Biarritz in 1939, leaving the fragrance without its creator.

Philippe, the devoted guardian

Philippe, the devoted guardian of Fouquet’s private world, became the sole custodian of the bottles.

He continued to honor requests for a few months, preserving the essence with meticulous care, yet as the turmoil of the Second World War spread across Europe, he was forced to leave the château, placing Fouquet’s creation at risk of disappearing entirely.

In the final shipments, Philippe hid the bottles inside hand-carved books, a discreet and ingenious measure to protect the fragrance from seizure, ensuring that Fouquet’s creation would survive even the most turbulent of times.

The legacy recovered

Decades later, the formula for Eight & Bob The Original has been completely recovered, along with its carefully crafted production process.

Once again, it has become one of the most exclusive scents, cherished by the world’s most elegant men and women.

A composition that refuses to age

The journey of The Original Eight & Bob is not only a tale of legacy and devotion but also a celebration of scent itself.

Preserved through decades by meticulous hands, The Original reveals its genius in every note, a conversation between memory and presence:

  • Top notes – Pink Pepper, Cardamom, Lemon: rosy and subtly spiced, with a zesty hint of lemon that evokes a contemporary freshness while maintaining timeless refinement.
  • Heart notes – Labdanum, Violet Leaves, Wood: intricate and layered, reminiscent of the sweet, fruity, woody aromas of twentieth-century Paris, a quiet nod to Fouquet’s sensibilities.
  • Base notes – Amber, Sandalwood, Vetiver: warm and enduring, accentuating its discreet elegance, leaving a soft signature that endures long after the wearer has departed.

Crafted at a moment when citrus fougères were the hallmark of masculine refinement, The Original transcends trends through its intricate and balanced composition.

True distinction, Fouquet understood, is not born of the era but exists in dialogue with every moment that follows. A fragrance with history.  Experience Eight & Bob The Original yourself.
